Welcome to the Monster in My Head Show, where we dive into real insecurities and issues many of us face while exploring unique ways to overcome them. I'm your host, BRE, and today's episode is a bit different—no guest, just a direct conversation about overcoming perfectionism. Before we delve in, I want to mention my new song, "Unperfect," is out now, which is the song that inspired this episode. You can check it out here!
Perfectionism has been a constant companion in my life. In this episode, I'll share five tips that have helped me shed the pressures that come with perfectionism and embrace myself flaws and all!
1.Realize Nobody is Perfect:
- Acknowledge that online representations are curated, showcasing idealized moments.
- Even friends who look like they have everything figured out have baggage, stuff they're working on, and issues they're trying to overcome.
- Literally no one is perfect. So holding yourself to the standard of perfection when no one else is reaching that standard either is unfair to you.
2.Perfection is a Moving Target:
- Perfectionism is not about achieving goals but rather a shaming mindset that will always make you feel like you are not enough.
- Recognize that reaching one goal won't silence the perfectionist voice; it always seeks more.
- Shift focus from achieving perfection to addressing the perfectionist voice within.
3.Stop Comparing Yourself:
- Comparison leads to misery; focus on being present and grateful for your own journey.
- Don't compare your life, goals, or achievements to those of others. You are uniquely you.
- You don't know the full picture of others' lives; avoid self-sabotage through comparison.
4.Give Yourself Grace:
- Embrace your quirks and flaws; nobody has life figured out completely.
- Life is a constant cycle of growth and change; accept that you're a work in progress.
- Release the pressure to meet arbitrary timelines and standards. No one's life is the same, we all have different ways we do things and times when they're done. Just focus on being you to the best of your ability.
5.Get Started Imperfectly:
- Waiting to feel good enough to do something before you even start is paralyzing.
- Begin imperfectly; enjoy the learning process and embrace growth.
- You'll never become an expert without allowing yourself to start somewhere.
Perfection is an illusion, and the pursuit of it can be damaging. Embrace imperfection, recognize your worth, and focus on becoming the best version of yourself.
